Herb Wood

August 8, 1922 — June 10, 2017

Thoreau wrote "Most people lead lives of quiet desperation." Herb was definitely an exception!

Herb passed away peacefully at his home over the weekend.

Herb was born Aug. 8, 1922 in Tipperary, IA. He lost his mother when he was less than a year old, being cared for by his grandparents until becoming the son to Vaniellia and Fagan Wood and moving to Bend, OR where he developed his love of nature. He graduated from Bend High School. Community service involvement was important to Herb including the Lions Club, Oak Grove Community Center, Arrowhead Ranch and Youth at Risk. When WWII broke out Herb enlisted and found his path to that of a fighter pilot for the US Navy flying Grumman Hellcat off the USS Yorktown, VF88 over Japan. He served until age 60.

Herbs career concluded as International Account Manager for AT&T representing John Deere Communications Division. His love of flying was evidenced by his QB membership and starting the QC airshow with Dwayne Evans in the 60's. Herb was an avid hunter, competitive sheet shooter, field trail participant and pool shark. If you played him, you lost.

Those left to hold his memory are his children Melanie Wood, John (Nancy) Wood, and MaryBeth Wood; 4 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; special friends Dan Murphy, Doug Carlstrom and Anita Evans.

Herb was preceded in death by his wife Rose.

Visitation will be Thursday from 9:00 a.m - 11:00 a.m at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis.

Military honors will follow at the Rock Island Arsenal. Those wishing to attend the graveside service, please arrive to the funeral home by 11:00 a.m.

If you think of Herb and would like to do something in his honor, try one of these: -volunteer as a school or community center with kids or a library -write a letter to an older person, (we don't text) tell them how you feel about them -if you smoke, quit, don't drink and drive -turn you TV, phone or device off and talk to your kids -forgive someone who doesn't deserve it -say something nice to someone, make their day -if you want to contribute do so to High Flight Fund to help give kids a chance to fly, there's nothing like it.
