Biography

Steven Lavern Nitz Sr., 58, of East Moline, died Monday, Jan. 4, 2010, at Loyola Medical University, Chicago.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Silvis Heights Baptist Church, Silvis, where he attended. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Schroder Mortuary, Silvis. Burial will be at National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the family.

He was born Sept. 30, 1951, in Moline, to John and Joyce Ragan Nitz. He graduated from Riverdale High School in 1969. He married Cindy Chandes on May 5, 1977, in Port Byron.

Over the years Steve owned and operated a couple laundry mats in the area and maintained several apartments and condos until he became disabled.

He served in the Army, driving a supply truck in Vietnam.

He enjoyed racing at the Cordova Dragway and working on cars and riding his motorcycle.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy, East Moline; sons, Steven L. (April) Nitz Jr., Davenport, Christopher Nitz, East Moline; granddaughter, Emma Winters; mother, Joyce Nitz, Moline; brother, Mike (Becky) Nitz, Ohio; sister-in-law, Becky (Rick) Evans, East Moline; father-in-law, George Chandes, East Moline; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Nitz; and a sister, Teri Lynn.
