Mary A. Simons, 91, of East Moline passed away February 3, 2023 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf.
A celebration of life will be 10am February 28, 2023 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bettendorf. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Mary was born November 27, 1931 in Muscatine, IA the daughter of Lindley and Mildred (Johnson) Hoopes. She graduated from Muscatine Grade and High Schools. Mar was a member of Musserville Methodist Church in Muscatine where she sang in the choir and became the organist. She worked at the Musser Public Library in Muscatine and at the grade school as a librarian. Mary married Earl J. Simons. Jr. October 5, 1957. Together they lived in New Orleans and Lake Charles, Louisiana until they moved to East Moline and raised their two sons Michael and Robert. Earl passed away November 18, 1995.
Mary worked for East Moline School District 37, John Deere Middle School, and Hillcrest Elementary as a librarian. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Moline where she was the choir director and a member of the women’s group. She later became a member of Our Savior Lutheran in Bettendorf where she sang in the choir and joined the women’s group. Mary was also a volunteer at Lutheran Hospital for 13 years in the hospice unit and was a member of the Dorthea Bensen Auxiliary for many years.
Survivors include her sons Michael (Danette) Simons and Robert (Mela) Simons; grandchildren Alyssa, Aubrey, Emily (Dean), and Eli (Rochelle); great grandchildren Macy, Emma, Israel, Alia, and Mikaela and a brother Thomas Hoopes.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Alexandra, sister Clara, and brother Joseph.
