Sylvester McCabe

Sylvester "Sam" McCabe, 81, of Colona, passed away June 8, 2016, at Hammond-Henry Hospital in Geneseo. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Colona. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Schroder Mortuary in Colona. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to one's choice or to St. Jude's. Sylvester A. McCabe was born March 23, 1935, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of Benedict and Rose Lannen McCabe. He married Janice Reeder on Jan. 4, 1958, in Decorah, Iowa. Sam worked at John Deere Harvester in East Moline, retiring after 35 years. He served on the Colona City Council and was past president and coach for Colona Little League and past president of the Colona School Board. Sam was also cub master for cub scouts and active with the Lions Club. Survivors include his wife, Janice; children, Kevin (Diana) McCabe, Hillsdale, Jay (Bao) McCabe, Tulsa, Okla., Rick McCabe, Rock Island, and Kristen Crimmins, Geneseo; grandchildren, James (Nicole) McCabe, Shelly Christensen, Mitchell (Sarah) McCabe, Brittany (Ben) Junis and Danielle Patterson; 12 great-grandchildren. Sam was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
